‘It’s all right really, I’m used to it now.’

‘Well from one overworked colleague to another, help me finish my days work and get home?’

‘I would if I could, but I have a protocol to follow, and if I don’t it will be instant dismissal. They don’t mess around at this place, you want to see the list of ex employees. All you can do is leave it with me, and I’ll make sure it gets to the right person.’

‘Could you make a call, and see if the Managing Director is at work? All it would take is a call.’

‘There’s nobody here to sign for it, I’m the only one here.’

‘What do you mean there’s nobody else here? Look at all the cars.’

‘Trust me, there’s nobody here. Like I said, I can sign for the parcel, it’s the only way you’re going to complete your job today.’

‘I’m not sure if I can do that, I’ll have to speak to my boss’ I reply, leaving the window and heading back to my vehicle. I throw the parcel into the boot of my car and start to walk around the perimeter of the property, to see if I can find a way in. Much of the exterior fencing is new, with only one area I notice that’s recently seen repairs. It must be twelve foot high, a good third higher than the fence around Time Computer Utilities. There are CCTV cameras everywhere, pointing at every part of the building, with no area unwatched. It’s like Fort Knox, chains and padlocks on every possible entrance, someone has made it very difficult to get inside. I notice a couple of security dogs walking freely around the car park, all fenced in, with food bowls left by a padlocked gate. There are piles of dog faeces scattered around the car park, that look like they’ve been there sometime. I walk back to my car as there’s a mass exodus from Time Computer Utilities, it must be the end of their shift. I try flagging vehicles down but I’m ignored until the line of cars passing me is interrupted by a small blue Cinquecento that pulls over and parks next to my Passat. The man inside winds his window down to speak. ‘Can I help?’ he asks.

‘Yeah thanks for stopping. I’m just wondering if you’ve ever seen anyone leaving or arriving for work at Pearl Holdings, opposite?’
